Graphic Novel Review - Ghostopolis by Doug Tennapel (5/5 stars)

Reading level: Middle Grade/Young Adult
Genre: Graphic Novel/Fantasy
Size: 272 pages
Publisher: GRAPHIX
Release Date: July 1, 2010
ISBN: 978-0545210287
Stand Alone or Series: Stand Alone
Source: Borrowed from Library
Rating: 5/5 stars

I picked this book up at the library on a whim and I am so glad I did. This was a wonderful story with some great illustrations. The story is meaningful, fun, and quirky all at the same time.

Garth is a kid with problems, he has a life-threatening condition that no doctor can solve. Imagine his surprise when he is accidentally zapped into the Ghost world by an accident prone ghost hunter. While there Garth learns he has fantastic powers and ends up facing off against Ghostopolis's evil ruler. Garth learns a lot about his family's past and about himself while he is there. Now Garth needs to figure out how to get back.

I loved the idea behind this story. How cool that Garth gets zapped into a ghost world and finds out that he has super hero like abilities there? I also loved Garth's faithful skeleton horse, that horse was awesome and added a lot of fun to the story.

The story is suprisingly complex and creative. I was drawn into it right away and had to read the whole thing in one sitting because I just could not put it down. This is one of those graphic novels that will appeal to a broad range of ages. Depending on the age of the reader different messages can be taken from the book. At the most basic level it is a fun and engaging story about the adventure of a boy in a ghost world; on a more complex level is explores questions behind death and what happens after life.

The drawings were very well done. I never had trouble following them or figuring out what was going on. The characters were drawn very expressively...even the horse made out of bones had a ton of personality. So, I just really enjoyed it.

Overall this was an absolutely fantastic graphic novel. The idea is creative, the characters very engaging, and the story complex and interesting. It is one of those books that will appeal to a large age group. Young kids will love the adventure aspects of the story, older kids and adults will be drawn in by the whole "mystery of death" sub-theme. If you love fantasy graphic novels or paranormal graphic novels definitely give this one a read...it is exceedingly well done.

Susannah and Remy, two people ghosting through life, until they are brought together by a fateful 1Night Stand. Both are seeking re-entry to the land of the living and loving. Can they fulfill each other’s deepest desires and learn what it means to live again?

Teaser Line:
This is crazy! I feel more with this ghost than I ever have with men made of flesh and blood, including my husband who I loved since grade school. She opened her eyes, reached out, and placed her palms where she saw the outline of his cheeks. Leaning back until she rested on the blanket, she rejoiced that he’d followed her down, hovering over her so that the shimmering stars on the ceiling shone through his body. “Kiss me again, Remy. And this time don’t stop.”

Review - Goliath (Leviathan, Book 3) by Scott Westerfeld (5/5 stars)

Reading level: Young Adult
Genre: Steampunk
Size: 560 pages
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: September 20th, 2011
ISBN: 978-1416971777
Stand Alone or Series: 3rd (and final) book in the Leviathan series
Source: Bought
Rating: 5/5 stars

This is the third and final book in the Leviathan series by Westerfeld. As with the previous books in the series, we have an epic story full of adventure, and some beautiful picturesa to go along with it.

Alek and Deryn continue on their quest to both end World War I and restore Alek to his Austrian throne. Things gets crazy when they stumble upon mad scientist Tesla, who claims that he can end the war with a huge weapon known as Goliath. Deryn is running out of time to confess her love for Alek; although things would be easier on that front if Alek actually knew Deryn was a girl...

I love this world. With the Darwinists (people who make crazy animal machines) and the Clankers (people who use mechanical steampunk technology) you never know what crazy animal or invention you will run into next. This book is full of a ton of airship adventuring, politics, and just a touch of romance.

The deeper question of what should you sacrifice to stop a war is also addressed in detail and it makes for some interesting thinking material as well as a great story.

Alek and Deryn are wonderful characters with a wonderful relationship. They have been through so much together you just can't help but cheer them on through all of their troubles. The consequences of Deryn revealing that she's a girl are profound and I was constantly pulling for them both.

The illustrations throughout are beautiful and intricate, they match the tone of the story perfectly. This illustrations also help to show some of the items in the story that are a bit hard to picture with words alone (because of their complexity).

The plot moved crazy fast and took a number of unexpected turns. There were a couple points in this book where I couldn't even begin to guess how things would turn out. I loved that it kept me guessing.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It wrapped up the series nicely. This is a wonderfully creative world, with likable characters and a plot that keeps the reader engaged and surprised. I just really, really enjoyed reading this. I can't wait to see what Westerfeld comes up with next!

Excerpt from Book:
After one particularly long night, I poured myself a glass of wine and filled the tub. As I was about to ease into the rose-scented water, the bathroom light went out. I reached for the gun I had left on the counter before I realized that only the bathroom light had gone out. The hallway was still lit and I could still hear the soft music I’d left playing in the living room. The bulb had to be broken.

Making a mental note to pick up some spare light bulbs tomorrow, I pulled matches out of a drawer and lit the scented candle on the counter. I sank into the tub as the candlelight flickered and the scent of jasmine filled the room. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. That’s when I realized I was no longer alone.

Novella Review - Silver Shark (A Kinsmen Novella) by Ilona Andrews (4/5 stars)

Reading level: Adult
Genre: Science Fiction
Size: 242 KB
Publisher: NYLA
Release Date: September 14th, 2011
ASIN: B0005N9FPOO
Stand Alone or Series: 2nd Kinsmen Novella
Source: Bought
Rating: 4/5 stars

This is the second novella in the Kinsmen series by husband and wife writing team Ilona Andrews. This was another fast-paced science fiction story laced with romance. I really enjoyed reading it. I didn't like it quite as much as the first Kinsmen novel,Silent Blade, but it was still a great read.

Claire Shannon is a psycher, she's been trained to wage war with her mind. When the decades long war on her home planet ends Claire is deported and forced to hide her psychic abilities to survive. She arrives at a new beautiful planet and interviews for a job as an admin with the handsome Venturo Escana. Venturo is as deadly as he is handsome and Claire is drawn to his powerful psycher skills even as she is forced to hide her own psycher talents. When Claire tries to help out some people from her home planet she finds that she hasn't completely left war behind.

This was a very good novella. I really enjoy the Kinsmen world and wish that Andrews would do a full length Kinsmen novel so that we could learn even more about this world. I love reading about the psychers and their powers and enjoy reading about all the worlds where the characters come from.

As with all of the Andrews books, the characters were wonderful and absolutely sucked me into the story. The romance between Venturo and Claire is perfectly balanced; they have wonderful chemistry together.

The plot was fast-paced and I never found it to be boring or too predictable. The story was wrapped up nicely too.

Overall I really enjoyed this novella and am glad that I bought it. If you enjoyed the previous novel, Silent Blade, then I think you will enjoy this one as well. If you enjoy the Kate Daniels book, you will probably enjoy this too. There is a good mix here of science fiction, action, and romance. Can't wait to see what the next Kinsmen novella brings.
