Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week (checked out library books don’t count, eBooks & audio books do). Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.
This week I got five books. Four of them were e-books that I got online for my Kindle either really cheap or free. The first e-book was His Majesty's Dragon; I have been wanting to read this series and it popped up as free for my Kindle...so of course I had to download. The second book was Containment this was another book for my Kindle that was a $0.99 one. The third was Brave New World, which I have been wanting to get for my Kindle...it was on sale this week for a little over $2 so I downloaded that one two. Lastly from netgalley.com I got the third Nathaniel Fludd book "The Wyverns' Treasure".
I got one book from the Library; Demon Princess: Reign Check which I am very excited to read.
You can see more information on the books discussed below.
Her Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, Book 1) by Naomi Novik
First Sentence:"The deck of the French ship was slippery with blood, heaving in the choppy sea; a strike might as easily bring down the man making it as the intended target.
From Amazon.com: "Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain’s defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons.
When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future–and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire."
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
First Sentence: "A squat grey building of only thirty-four stories."
From Amazon.com: "Aldous Huxley's tour de force, Brave New World is a darkly satiric vision of a "utopian" future—where humans are genetically bred and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively serve a ruling order. A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, it remains remarkably relevant to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying entertainment."
Containment by Christian Cantrell
First Sentence: "The first thing Arik noticed when he opened his eyes was that he couldn't move his head."
From Amazon.com: "As Earth's ability to support human life diminishes, the Global Space Agency is formed with a single mandate: protect humanity from extinction by colonizing the solar system. Venus, being almost the same mass as Earth, is chosen over Mars as humanity's first permanent steppingstone into the universe. Arik Ockley is part of the first generation to be born and raised off-Earth. After a puzzling accident, Arik wakes up to find that his wife is three months pregnant. Since the colony's environmental systems cannot safely support any increases in population, Arik immediately resumes his work on AP, or artificial photosynthesis, in order to save the life of his unborn child. Arik's new and frantic research uncovers startling truths about the planet, and about the distorted reality the founders of the colony have constructed for Arik's entire generation. Everything Arik has ever known is called into question, and he must figure out the right path for himself, his wife, and his unborn daughter."
The Wyverns' Treasure (Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist, Book 3) by R. L. LaFevers
First Sentence: "There were times when Nathaniel Fludd wasn't sure he'd survive living with Aunt Phil."
From Amazon.com: "After tangling with the deadly basilisk, Nathaniel Fludd is glad to return to England with his Aunt Phil. But someone has ransacked their home, and their best suspect is the sinister man who's been trying to steal the Book of Beasts.
Before Nate and Aunt Phil can find the culprit, they are called to Welsh countryside. The wyverns (giant dragons) are in an uproar. Could the same man who ransacked the Fludd house be behind the rift with the wyverns? And just what does he want with The Book of Beasts? But before Nate can solve that mystery, he must calm the dragons before it's too late. It's just another day at work for the world's youngest beastologist!"
Demon Princess: Reign Check by Michelle Rowen
First Sentence: "Act normal, I told myself as I pushed through the front doorsof Erin Heights High School."
From Amazon.com: "Fresh from finding out she is a demon princess and meeting her father for the first time, Nikki Donovan is looking forward to getting back to her regular high school life. But then Rhys, the handsome teenage king of the faery realm, enrolls at her school as a "foreign exchange student." Her conflicted feelings for Rhys and her boyfriend are getting in the way of her new relationship with the Shadow-creature Michael. But this love triangle from hell isn't even Nikki's biggest problem: There's a new prophecy that claims she will destroy all the demon and human worlds. Her best friend Melinda just might be a demon-slayer-in-training. Throw in a field trip to none other than the Underworld itself . . . and Nikki's going to be hoping for a rain check on more than just her homework!"
