The Book Blogger Hop: October 15-17th

Book Blogger HopThe Book Blogger Hop is a weekly event hosted by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and runs from Friday to Sunday. The Hop is a fantastic way to get your blog noticed more and visit some other cool blogs that you didn't know about before. Head over and sign up and see what you can find!

Each week a different twist will be added to the hop so that everyone gets to know each other better so here's my little bit of information this week.

"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"

I know I have been participating erratically in this Hop!  It's been a rough couple weeks with my husband hospitalized with Lyme's and another family member going through brain surgery.  But things are calming down and so I am back :-)

Whether or not I finish a book I am having trouble reading really depends on a lot of things.  I will usually try to stick it out and finish a book.  But let's say the book is 800 pages and I am 100 pages in to it and hating it...well then I will usually set it aside.  That is just too much misery and torture and there are too many other good books out there to read.

There are some other things that will ensure I set a book aside I am not enjoying.  If I am having a bad week or in a really irritated mood, I might set it aside and pick it up again later just to be fair to the book and to get myself out of a reading slump.  If the book has a lot of grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors I will set it aside and never pick it up again...I just feel like an author who leaves that many errors doesn't care about the story or the reader.

There are also reasons why I might keep reading a book even if I am not enjoying it.  The number one reason is if I got the book from an author or publisher for review; I really try to finish all of these books.  I feel like I have to in order to give good feedback.  Another reason to finish a book is if a friend gave it to me to read or if I have heard that the ending of the book makes up for any shortcomings in the beginning.

So as you can see there are a lot of different situations that make me decide whether or not to finish a book I am disliking.  Overall I do try to finish all the books that I start; but sometimes time or poor book quality pushes me the other way.

  3. You make a good point about mood! Often there is something within a book that just annoys me if I'm in a bit of a mood and I find it best to put it aside! I can often pick them back up again when I'm calmer and find that I really enjoy the book.

    Have a great weekend :)

  4. You're right about moods. If I'm not feeling a book after 50-60 pages, I let it go. But if I got the book from the author or publicist I feel obligated to finish. I make an effort to finish everything, but sometimes I have to know when enough is enough. Happy reading!

  7. Happy HOP! Great answer. Most times it's timing and my mood that has me stop reading but I go back later and try again. When I really don't like the book and the more I read the more I'm hating it, I stop and ask myself what's so important about the book that I have to literally force myself to read it. I read because I enjoy it and it brings me pleasure. Something's wrong when reading turns into a chore.

Happy reading :) HOP by and visit me
