Flesh and Fire (Vineart War, Book 1) by Laura Anne Gilman (3/5 stars)

This is the first book in the "Vineart War Trilogy" by Laura Anne Gilman. I received this book as an Advanced Reading Copy through the Amazon Vine program. I have never read anything from Gilman before, although I have wanted to read her Retrievers series. I have mixed feelings about this book. Gilman created a couple great characters, a very unique and interesting magic system, and a complex world. Unfortunately the plot lags and the book doesn't resolve any story as much as just set things up.

Jerzy is a slave who ends up becoming an Apprentice to the Master Vineart Malech. Malech has noticed strange happenings in the different Vinearts properties, but can't get too involved because of the Vinearts vow to stay out of power struggles. In an attempt to get deeper insight into the problems surrounding him Malech apprentices Jerzy to another Vineart, something completely against tradition. Jerzy is supposed to discover how deeply the trouble has spread.

There were some really good things about this book. I loved the unique magic system; using Wine as a magic source is interesting. Gilman has created a world with a deep history and a complex interaction between Vinearts and political figures. The main characters of Malech and Jerzy are fairly well done; although they are not completely engaging, they are interesting characters with depth. The other characters in the book are given minimal page space and are not developed all that well. Although given how some of the characters come together at the end of the book, I think that the next book could be very engaging and Jerzy's travel companions could end up being wonderful characters to read about. I also enjoyed Gilman's writing style; she does a good job describing things in a way that creates great imagery without getting overly wordy.

My main problem with this book is the pacing and the plot. Much of the beginning of the book is spent with Jerzy learning Vineart crafts. This is interesting for a while, but gets drawn out too long. There are little hints of bad things going on around Jerzy but he is always removed from them. The point of view switches frequently between Jerzy and Malech; this never really got confusing but it was odd to have viewpoints switched mid-chapter. The story doesn't actually get interesting until the last third of the book where Jerzy goes to apprentice with a different Vineart.

I think it is fairly common for the first book in a fantasy trilogy to be mostly about training the hero, getting the world and magic system set up, etc. The problem in this case is that I am guessing that most of Gilman's Retriever series fans are more interested in the pace of an urban fantasy where everything is quickly set up and things actually happen. That is not the case in this book, things are very deliberately approached to the point that I didn't have a real sense of urgency for the story until I was almost to the end of the book. The book also doesn't wrap anything up, because there is no plot to wrap up.

My recommendation would be to wait until the second book is released and see how that one does You will probably want to read them one after the other anyway since this book just starts the story. Overall it is an interesting fantasy world, with decent characters, if the plot picks up in the second book this could be a very good series. Based on this book alone, it is just okay.

Mailbox Monday - 12/14

Mailbox Monday can be found at: The Printed Page

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week (checked out library books don’t count, eBooks & audio books do). Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

I got two books this week. They were both acquired through paperbackswap.com. The first book was "Territory" by Emma Bull. I absolutely loved her book "War for the Oaks"; so I am hoping I will love this one just as much. The second book was "A Kiss Before the Apocalypse" by Thomas E. Sniegoski. This is the first book in the Remy Chandler series. I read about Remy in a short story and really loved him; so I am eager to start this series.

Check out both books below. Hope you all have a great week and Happy Reading!!!

"Territory" by Emma Bull

First Sentence: "The buckskin horse walked up Allen Street just before dawn."
From Amazon.com: "Wyatt Earp. Doc Holliday. Ike Clanton.

You think you know the story. You don’t.

Tombstone, Arizona in 1881 is the site of one of the richest mineral strikes in American history, where veins of silver run like ley lines under the earth, a network of power that belongs to anyone who knows how to claim and defend it.

Above the ground, power is also about allegiances. A magician can drain his friends' strength to strengthen himself, and can place them between him and danger. The one with the most friends stands to win the territory.

Jesse Fox left his Eastern college education to travel West, where he’s made some decidedly odd friends, like the physician Chow Lung, who insists that Jesse has a talent for magic. In Tombstone, Jesse meets the tubercular Doc Holliday, whose inner magic is as suppressed as his own, but whose power is enough to attract the sorcerous attention of Wyatt Earp.

Mildred Benjamin is a young widow making her living as a newspaper typesetter, and—unbeknownst to the other ladies of Tombstone—selling tales of Western derring-do to the magazines back East. Like Jesse, Mildred has episodes of seeing things that can’t possibly be there.

When a failed stage holdup results in two dead, Tombstone explodes with speculation about who attempted the robbery. The truth could destroy Earp's plans for wealth and glory, and he'll do anything to bury it. Meanwhile, outlaw leader John Ringo wants the same turf as Earp. Each courts Jesse as an ally, and tries to isolate him by endangering his friends, as they struggle for magical dominance of the territory.

Events are building toward the shootout of which you may have heard. But you haven't heard the whole, secret story until you've read Emma Bull's unique take on an American legend, in which absolutely nothing is as it seems..."

"A Kiss Before the Apocalypse" (Remy Chandler, Book 1) by Thomas E. Sniegoski

First Sentence: "It was an unusually warm mid-September day in Boston."
From Amazon.com:
"Boston PI Remy Chandler is no ordinary man. He’s an angel who chose to renounce heaven and live on earth. So he’s perfect for the job of finding the Angel of Death, who has gone missing. But what at first seems to be about tracing a missing person turns out to involve much more—a conspiracy that has as its goal the destruction of the human race. And only Remy Chandler can stop it..."

Going Bovine by Libba Bray (4/5 stars)

I loved the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Bray and was excited to hear that she was writing a new book. This book is completely different from the Gemma Doyle story; it is more of a wacky and darkly humorous coming of age tale of a boy named Cameron. I liked the book, it was very entertaining although I found the last quarter of the book to be somewhat ambiguous and difficult to follow.

Cameron is kind of a loser. He doesn't care much about anything. Then he is diagnosed with mad cow's disease and finds out that he is going to die. That is until a punk angel named Dulcie shows up in his hospital room and tells him that he is actually infected by dark matter. Dulcie tells him that if he can find Dr. X (the mad scientist that traveled through different realities and brought dark matter back to earth) then Dr. X can cure Cameron and Cameron can save the world from absolute destruction. So Cameron along with Gonzo, the midget, and Balder, the yard gnome, take off on a quest to save the world (and Cameron) from absolute destruction.

The plot of this book is quick moving, if a bit meandering, and takes you on a number of wandering and unexpected paths. The story is chock-full of delightfully bizarre characters and interesting personalities. Much of this book reminded me of Daniel Pinkwater's "The Neddiad"; it has similar bizarre characters, teaches a coming-of-age lesson, follows a strange path, and has the whole save the world from absolute destruction theme to it. This book is darkly humorous and deals with a number of issues that many teens face.

Much of the story is about Cameron learning how to live and take an interest in life. Although as the story continues things get vague. Cameron has periodic flashbacks or episodes where he is being treated in the hospital; although the reader is lead to think these are dreams. As the story progresses it is difficult to tell if his adventure are reality or him being in the hospital is reality. The end confused the heck out of me and I had no idea whether Cameron was alive or dead and which reality he had ended up in. So, those who like a clear-cut story should look else where. I do understand that to some extent this story was about alternate realities, so some confusion generally comes a long with that.

While I don't mind some vagueness in my books and content that makes the reader wonder and think; I do think that the end portion of the book could have been a bit clearer about what was happening. The end is almost dreamlike and left me feeling unsatisfied as a reader. Also there is a lot of drug use, sex, and swearing in this book; so I would recommend it for the older young adult set rather than the younger set.

In summary this was an entertaining read. With wonderfully bizarre characters, a surprisingly engaging plot, it was great fun. The only part I didn't enjoy was the ambiguity of the ending. I will definitely keep reading Bray's future works. I think the drastic change of genre for this book was a great decision on her part and really shows the breadth of her writing talent.

News - Moning Annouces Title for Book 5 in Fever Series and Release Date is set for Fablehaven Book 5

Okay so I found out some great news this morning!

First of all the title for book 5 of Karen Marie Moning's "Fever" series has been announced. It will be called "Shadowfever" and will be released some time in 2010. I have the first three books of this series at home and really want to read them. I've been keeping tabs on this series; and from what I know the fifth book is supposed to be the last in the series.

Secondly, the release date of the fifth (and final) book in Brandon Mull's Fablehaven series has been announced. "Keys to the Demon Prison" will be released on March 25th of 2010. I haven't seen the cover art or a synopsis yet. I have absolutely adored this series right from the beginning and I am very eager to see how everything plays out!

Well, that's all I have for news today. Hope you all have a great day :-)

Waiting on Wednesday - 12/9

Okay "Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week my WoW book is "Reign Check" (Demon Princess, Book 2) by Michelle Rowen. I really loved the first book "Reign or Shine" in this series and have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next book. I know the book cover looks totally girly, but it was really quite the action packed book and a super fun read; with great world-building.
